First “Sustainable Disposables” Contest Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark Ambassadors’ Artwork with Plastic Waste

Director of Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark stated: First “Sustainable disposables” Contest was held in the Educational Geopark Center located in south of the island in Dulab village with the intention of raising public awareness of the environmental hazards of plastic use.

Alireza Amri Kazemi, according to the Public Relations and International Affairs of Qeshm Free Area Organization, announced: Students attempted to promote the culture of minimizing and eventually eliminating plastic bag usage through Art as a visual language and the most expressive and effective medium of communication by creating decorative as well as functional objects with the use of recyclable waste materials.

He continued: Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark holds annual workshops and educational courses for children in the southern villages of the island, but this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the management held the “Sustainable Disposables” Contest for students on the International Plastic Bag Free Day”.

Director of Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark pointed out that students had to submit photographs of their artwork in the framework of handicrafts, toys, and functional objects that fit into everyday life until July 21 to enter the contest.

As stated by Amri Kazemi, 20 students from the southern part of the island created innovative products out of plastic and disposable dishes, waste and objects they had at home while addressing subject matters such as revival of the intangible heritage and local games through making models and decorative objects. All contestants were honored and awarded.

He mentioned that in order to protect and conserve the nature and the surrounding area we live in taking any action no matter how small is vital and stands as an act of kindness to the planet Earth so that we can sustain the environment for the generations to come.

3 of July is marked as the International Plastic Bag Free Day with the aim of promoting environmental awareness through encouragement of all to reject using plastic bags.
