Reception of the green card and extension of the membership of Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network for four years


The Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Qeshm Free Zone Area announced reception of the green card and extension of the membership of Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network for four years. 

According to the public relations and international affairs departments in the Qeshm Free Zone Area, at the meeting of the Supreme Council of UNESCO Geoparks, Afshar Fathollahi announced that Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark had succeeded in receiving the green card and membership renewal with the most votes. He added that Global Geoparks are assessed by UNESCO experts every 4 years, and if approved, they receive the green card and membership renewal for 4 years. Otherwise, they will receive a yellow or red card, which means suspension and cancelation of membership.

The CEO of Qeshm Free Zone Area, while congratulating to Qeshm residents and all compatriots on receiving the green card of Qehsm Geopark, added that this success is the result of the 24-hour efforts of the people who have tried to protect this global heritage.   

Mr. Fathollahi stated that the UNESCO Global Geopark Network's criteria and standards for granting green maps are very scientific, strict and accurate. Thankfully, the positive actions of our colleagues at Qeshm Geopark Management, the active involvement of local communities and environmentalists have helped Qeshm Global Geopark meet these standards.

According to Mr. Fathollahi, Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark has been introduced as a successful example, among other Geoparks by attracting the attention of UNESCO evaluators, and in this regard, other countries can use the knowledge and experience of this precious heritage to develop their Geoparks.

Moreover, the Supreme Council of UNESCO Global Geoparks consists of 12 expert members and the Director of the Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark is present as the only member from West Asia and the Middle East on this council.
