Gouran Cooperative Company The maritime culture and seafaring are among the most major intangible heritage sites on Qeshm Island. Qeshm Island has been a port for trade with Arab countries, Africa, and India since ancient times. The history of seafaring in Iran dates back six thousand years, as evidenced by the clay seal found in Chaghamish, Dezful. Since the Achaemenid period, Qeshm Island, along with old Hormuz and Siraf, has been known as a port for trading and a base for military ships in Iran. Business trips have been made from Qeshm to India, China, Malaysia, African countries and even Madagascar. From China, silk and skins from northern regions of Siberia, along with gold, pearls, carpets, etc., have been exported to other countries. Gouran is one of the oldest settlements on Qeshm Island and was one of the natural harbors for anchoring and repairing ships. This activity continues traditionally until today. Since 2017, the management of Qeshm Island UGGp, in cooperation with the local community of Gouran village, has established a program to introduce tourists to the traditional wooden boat and maritime culture. Since ancient times, 40 types of small and large wooden boats have been identified as traveling in the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. In 2011, the knowledge of making and sailing traditional wooden boats in the Persian Gulf was registered as the 8th Iranian Intangible Artifact. This was done to preserve the art of the Southern men. Gouran, despite having minimal facilities, is currently one of the most important villages for crafting the best wooden ships. These boats can last up to a hundred years and are traditionally launched into the water.
